You took the music with you
And I wondered if you knew
I watched you
From the windshield of my car
Knowing that you’d have to be much farther from me
Than just across the parking lot
Before you could be closer to me again
It wasn’t easy
Watching you leave
But then, it never is
I watched the way your shoulders moved
And
I watched as you went
From
The one holding my hand moments before
To
The one reviewing checklists in his mind
From
The one snuggled up with me on the couch this morning
To
The one much farther than a couch cushion away
When you came into my life
You brought the music with you
Music in the time signatures of joy and happiness
Music in the tempo of heart-beats, thrumming staccato when you hold my hand
As I watched you walk away
And disappear
Through the technicolor television of tempered windshield glass
Past my steering wheel and rear view mirror
There was a moment
When
The music
And sound
And joy
And light
That you brought with you
Stopped
And you were gone
And suddenly
I found myself in pulsing silence
And what moments before
Was a screen filled with the promise of the future
Was transformed again
Into
Just a parking lot
It struck me then
How
In one instant
A future
Filled with symphonies of promise and wonder
Can transform
Into a silent parking lot,
Asphalt made hazy with sun-heat
I hadn’t moved an inch
But I wasn’t where I had been
You took the music with you
And I wondered if you knew
